Khargeswar Mahadev Temple is one of the oldest temples in the city of Kharagpur and is dedicated to God of Gods Mahadev, Lord Shiva. Temple is situated at a distance of 15 kms from the centre of Kharagpur city.

Khargeswar was built around 400 years ago by King Kharag Singh and hence the name of the city and the temple are intertwined. This place is also mentioned in Mahabharata, as it was ruled by Hiramba, the deamon king and was destroyed by Bhima. The temple is at the very same place where Bhima once killed Hiramba during the time of their exile.

The temple has beautiful architecture and resembles a typical north Indian hindu temple. It is crowded with devotees on special occasions, especially Mahashivaratri. Temple is known for the divine inner peace it provides to the devotees who seek solace. It is open throughout the year and can be visited at anytime during the day. Temple is open to visitors during timings 6 AM to 9 PM.
